Happy 80th, Willie Howard Mays Jr. ( →
I sure do love the way Posnanski writes.  He writes like I wish I could write and I’m jealous. When I was a kid I used to lie in bed and pray to Willie Mays.  When I think about it now, this is very strange for several reasons.  Willie Mays is just a man.  He was, and still is, very much alive.  I’d never seen him play, obviously, nor met him.  But I prayed to him, I think,  because...

chickslikesportstoo asked: Dear FreakyFranchise,
Please comment on the recent incident involving Bryan Stow. I'd like to hear your thoughts before I write my blogpost on it. Thank you, sincerely, chickslikesportstoo :)
PS: Are you gonna do an NFL mock draft? My answer for you is yes, you will.

Exhibition 1
It’s a bit exciting to know that by the time I step into AT&T for opening night/the ring ceremony, I will already have been to five Giants games this year (3 in AZ, one exhibition at AT&T, another at the Coliseum). Last night we headed to the city to see the first of three Giants/As exhibitions they’ll play before heading to LA for Thursday evening’s opener. Lineup was...

OAK-PHX is a short flight; it seemed as though we were barely in the air.  My Southwest flight was full of Giants fans heading to Spring Training; mainly 21-50 year old guys…a few families…and me.  The crew called it the “Giants shuttle to Phoenix.”  First impressions of Scottsdale were that it was quite ugly and full of strip malls.  But, the nearby mountains are...

Brian Murphy was just on my flight to Phoenix and put my bag in and out of the overhead for me. He asked if I was staying for a month so I told him I’d just needed to pack a lot of shoes and he laughed at me. I’m a winner.

It's time for Rowand to go
Listening to Marty Lurie’s chat with Bochy yesterday, I couldn’t help but think that the player with whom Boch had to have a closed-door chat about his attitude was probably Rowand—who else, really, could be concerned about where/how much playing time he’s getting? (and have a bad attitude about it). Ishikawa is getting a decent amount of time, as is Nate. Plus, they know...

Suppan looks good. Runzler looks good. I am well aware that a certain former fifth starter looked real good last spring…but I’m hopeful. Don’t freak out. Also: Brandon Belt. Yes. I think that mid-summer, when BB (can he be BB now please?)’s dingers are floating into the cove and Buster’s shots are smacking the glove in left, things will be mighty fine down at Third...

Jenny—I agree with all of this.  I know you’re not a Niners fan, but the possibility of a lockout is even scarier for those of us who are, since Harbaugh will have no time to get settled, and oh, that pesky quarterback situation too (PS- can I have your McNabb jersey if he comes our way?).  On the injury front, you know my thoughts.  I think it’s unconscionable the way the league...

Don’t freak out.  Yet.  I think everyone is a little freaked about Cain’s elbow, and yes, it may well turn into something problematic later.  But it’s barely March…no need to completely lose it over some tenderness yet.  Vogelsong looked good…that’s good.  Suppan looks good…that’s good.  Sanchez is pitching really well.  That’s definitely good....

hilarity, probably not far from truth, from MCC (http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2011/2/9/1982779/community-projection-pat-burrell)— “The offseason went something like this, then: Burrell’s agent: We’re opening up the bidding. Jenny’s good assessment of one of the problems facing the NFL right now…I think my real problem is any effort, past or present, on the part of the league to ignore or sweep the evidence under the rug.  Option 3, a sort of full-disclosure-in-contracts effort, would certainly help that.  I think some combination of that + better support (financial or otherwise) for older players feeling...

this is unbelievable
As a sobering observation, Giants fans could remind people that the Phillies were not even in the World Series this year. The Giants were a delightful surprise put together late in the season, and they deserved their championship, but that is ancient history now that the Phillies have parlayed attendance, cable and other income to snatch Lee from the Yankees and the Rangers. Dear New York...

dear phillies, congratulations!  you’ve now assembled perhaps the finest starting rotation of all time.  conveniently, now all the pitchers we weren’t “supposed” to beat but very much did beat, multiple times, are all in the same place.   see you in october, bitches. xoxo, the giants

findtheswagger: According to Ken Rosenthal, Pat Burrell’s hometown deal with the Giants is worth one million dollars, plus incentives.  He really wanted to stay in San Francisco. And that, my friends, is why I love Pat Burrell.

why I love the 2010 Giants so much
I consider it some sort of deep, dark secret that my father once, sort of, rooted for the Dodgers. In his childhood, my dad’s grandparents lived in LA, so he made trips to Dodger Stadium to see them play. My dad came to love Sandy Koufax so much that he sort of started rooting for the Dodgers along with the Giants (yes, this clearly makes no sense to my thinking—but maybe Koufax was...

thoughts on actual baseball
Okay, coming down from the high a little bit…ready to discuss the important stuff, instead of my affection for Pat Burrell’s ass.   2011 Giants: C: B. Posey 1B: 2B: F. Sanchez SS: 3B: RF: C. Ross CF: A. Torres LF: So.  Four position players done, obvious, locked-in, ready to go.  Good.  But now some question marks.  DeRosa should be good to go at either 3B or left.  I think...
